Project Summary: Full architectural metalwork package for the redevelopment of Rembrandt House.
MKMetals Ltd was appointed by Henley Homes Group PLC to supply and install the full architectural metalwork package for the redevelopment of Rembrandt House in Watford.
The building, which had remained largely unoccupied for almost two decades, had suffered deterioration to its distinctive Edwardian façade. The scheme involved the careful restoration of the historic structure alongside its transformation into 46 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.
Our architectural metalwork designs were carefully developed to respect and preserve the building’s historic character while accommodating essential structural alterations. A key aspect of the redevelopment included the introduction of an additional mezzanine level within the existing roof space, requiring sensitive integration of new structural elements within the retained fabric.
Through close collaboration with Henley Homes and the wider project team, MKMetals Ltd delivered detailed, sympathetically designed metalwork solutions that supported both restoration and modernisation objectives. The completed development revitalises a long-neglected landmark, bringing it back into active use while preserving its architectural integrity for residents and visitors alike.

Project Summary: Complex and wide-ranging structural and architectural metalwork package
MKMetals Ltd was appointed by Henley Homes Group PLC to deliver the architectural metalwork package for the regeneration of the Grade II listed Lilian Baylis School in Lambeth, now known as Lilian Baylis Old School.
Closed in 2005 shortly after receiving its listed status, the former school had fallen into disrepair before being acquired by Henley Homes in 2011. The redevelopment has transformed the historic site into a vibrant residential community of 149 new homes, with 40% designated as affordable housing.
MKMetals Ltd played a key role in enhancing the building’s façades while carefully preserving its original architectural integrity. The scheme retained the distinctive brick wings, horizontal concrete channels, and large window openings that define the building’s character. Where the concrete channels projected prominently from the façade, balconies were thoughtfully integrated to complement the original design language.
As part of the adaptation works, former classroom sill levels were lowered to introduce floor-to-ceiling glazing, improving light and access while maintaining proportional harmony. To address thermal performance and mitigate cold bridging between exposed concrete elements and internal spaces, boxed insulation channels were discreetly incorporated beneath the horizontal concrete bands, subtly refining the elevations without compromising their historic appearance.
The redevelopment preserved much of the original circulation strategy, with staircase cores serving up to four apartments per floor, limiting the introduction of intrusive communal corridors. The retained staircases remain a striking architectural feature, characterised by their sculptural, curved concrete forms and minimalist retro aesthetic. MKMetals Ltd designed, fabricated, and installed new stair balustrades that seamlessly integrate with the existing stair structures, respecting their heritage character while meeting modern safety standards.
The completed regeneration successfully revitalises a historically significant building, blending contemporary residential use with sensitive architectural preservation. MKMetals Ltd is proud to have contributed to this award-winning heritage-led development.
