MEZZANINE FLOORS

Mezzanine floors are an effective solution for maximising unused vertical space, creating additional usable areas within a building without the need for structural extension. By introducing a suspended intermediate platform, mezzanines provide functional space both above and below the structure.

A mezzanine floor is typically installed between two primary levels of a building or between the floor slab and ceiling. They are particularly well suited to industrial and commercial environments where high internal clearances allow for semi-permanent or freestanding structures.

Core structural components include:

• Primary beams:  Main structural members spanning between columns to support the mezzanine.

• Purlins / joists:  Secondary members fixed between the primary beams to support the decking system.

​​

• Columns:  Vertical supports designed to transfer loads from the mezzanine structure safely to the floor slab.

• Decking:  The working surface of the mezzanine, available in a range of materials to suit application, loading, and finish requirements.

Depending on use and regulatory requirements, mezzanine floors can also be provided with a range of ancillary components, including:

• Handrails and edge protection:  Securing open edges and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

​​

• Staircases:  Providing access to the mezzanine level, with design and configuration determined by UK Building Regulations, occupancy, travel distance, and fire safety considerations.

• Pallet gates:  Commonly used in industrial settings to safely manage the loading and unloading of materials.

​​

• Fire protection:  Applied in accordance with Building Regulations, with the level of protection determined by use, occupancy, and fire strategy. Storage-only mezzanines may require reduced fire protection depending on classification.
