Project Summary:  Structural and architectural metalwork package for a high-quality residential scheme.

MKMetals Ltd was appointed by Henley Homes Group PLC to supply and install the structural steelwork and architectural metalwork package for a residential development comprising 51 one- and two-bedroom apartments on York Road in London’s prestigious Nine Elms district.

Our scope included the structural steelwork framework, balconies, stair and structural balustrades, railings, and gate installations, delivering a comprehensive and integrated metalwork solution for the scheme.

To maximise programme efficiency, Henley Homes adopted a top-down construction methodology, enabling the superstructure to progress concurrently with basement excavation works. The site presented substantial engineering and logistical challenges due to its highly constrained footprint, bounded by party walls on all sides, which complicated the formation of the new basement structure.

The use of plunge columns and the casting of the podium slab at grade level created an early structural base, allowing the superstructure to commence without delay. As a result, the steel frame advanced to Level 3 while basement excavations continued beneath — a coordinated approach that optimised programme sequencing within the restricted city-centre environment.

Through close collaboration and careful coordination, MKMetals Ltd successfully delivered a structurally robust and architecturally detailed package, contributing to the efficient progression of this high-quality residential development in a prime London location.

Project Summary:  Complex and wide-ranging structural and architectural metalwork package

MKMetals Ltd was appointed by Henley Homes Group PLC to deliver the architectural metalwork package for the sensitive redevelopment of the Grade II listed former Barnes Hospital site in Cheadle, Manchester.

The scheme, known as Barnes Village, comprises 156 new homes, including 39 apartments within the restored hospital building and 117 newly constructed two-, three-, and four-bedroom family homes. Contemporary townhouses are carefully integrated within and around the original hospital structure, blending heritage restoration with modern residential design.

Given the site’s listed status and historic significance, our architectural metalwork designs required meticulous consideration. A key challenge was ensuring that new architectural features complemented the restoration works while preserving the integrity and character of the original façade. All metalwork elements were detailed to respect the building’s historic proportions, materials, and architectural language, ensuring harmony between old and new.

Barnes Village has received significant national recognition, including the Gold Award for Regeneration at the WhatHouse? Awards 2018, two International Awards (2018/19), and ‘Best New Development in the North’ at the First Time Buyer Readers’ Awards 2017.

MKMetals Ltd is proud to have contributed to an award-winning regeneration scheme that revitalises a historic landmark while delivering high-quality new homes for the community.
